Leprechaun Returns - St Paddy's Day Special
Hey everyone! This is Carl coming to you from the Crap Shack! It's St. Paddy's Day 2019 and while everyone is getting drunk on green beer and pinching each other I'm... eating cookies with green frosting and watching the new Leprechaun reboot... my life is so exciting...
This movie is a new SyFy Original movie for 2019 that is available now for streaming on some services and I'm sure will find its way to more in the coming days/months. St Paddy's day is the official release date I believe but don't quote me on that! I'm sure it will also come to the SyFy channel for those of you that still watch cable tv in 2019!
For those living under a rock for the last 25 or so years... This was the original Leprechaun played by legendary little person Warwick Davis. That dude works.
Older readers might know him best as mothafuckin WILLOW! The kickass 80s fantasy flick that made thousands of little 80s kids call anyone shorter than them "peck" for rest of their natural lives.
Younger readers probably know him as pretty much every single short character from the Harry Potter movies. Seriously, the dude played like all of em.
Some of you might also know this familiar face from the first movie as well!

Anyone shocked she didn't return for the reboot? No? Me either... |
This movie was her first big role... You're welcome Friends fans!
For those not in the cool kids club... that club being the kids that watch these movies. I dunno what club you were thinking of... The original movie is about a girl that goes to stay with her dad in the middle of nowhere North Dakota and help him fix up this house hes recently got.
Hijinks ensue and a 600 year old fuckin tiny dude with a love for green and gold gets set loose with only one purpose "I want me gold!" and will stop at nothing to get it. It's up to Tory (the daughter) and a cast of random characters that continues to get smaller as the movie ticks on.
Needless to say, in the end they put the small angry man to bed, dust their hands off and call it a good days work, along with also deciding never to go back to ND... probably.
*Wayne's World time machine effect here*
And here we are, 25 years later! We've dug too deep and awakened something ancient that is now going to destroy the world and probably time as we know it!
Wait... totally wrong theme there. It's 25 years later and the daughter of Tory is headed back to where it all started. For some reason now, a college owns the house from the original movie and a sorority is going to turn it into their house? I don't know why and they probably didn't either.
Doesn't matter, cause movies! But this sequel/reboot/whatever tosses out the numerous sequels in the original line and ops to be a direct sequel to the original. Gone are leprechauns fantastic adventures such as "In the Hood" and "In Space"... I'm not sure if its for the best really.

The years... have been good to the leprechaun... yeah we'll go with good... |
Our hero, Lily, is on a bus headed to the middle of nowhere ND cause shes just transferred to this sorority and is going to help them fix up the old house so they can move in!
She gets dropped off at the bus stop where her sorority sister is suppose to pick her up, but oh no!, shes been forgotten! So she takes a ride from the only returning character from the original movie, good ol "gotta be somewhere on the spectrum" Ozzie!
Yuup! It's been 25 years and he's still kickin! Just living his life and bein the best Ozzie he can be! They even got the original actor back for the role. It was pretty awesome. He's the only returning character or actor from the original. Warwick also didn't return for this outing.
He takes Lily to the house all the while playing his new role of the movies Harbinger. And man, did they nail it with the set. I don't know if the house in this movie is the same as the original but damn they did a great job recreating it if its not. They really knocked it out of the park.
After dropping her off we get started with the movie proper and meet her new sorority sisters, all of which are not important at all to the story!
It doesn't take long before our boy, the angry short dude, is making reappearances. Turns out these girls are all hipsters and want to go off grid for the new house and are in the process of getting the solar and well pump set up.
For some reason the creepy old well that looks like its left over from a war involving lots of wells, hasn't been used in years! Gee... I wonder why that could be... huehuehue...
So the leprechauns back and this time he's friendly and fun loving and he helps the girls finish up the sorority house and they do each others toes, then he becomes the schools new mascot! THE END!!
Just kiddin!! Boy I really had you guys going there for a minute didn't I?! No he's back and he wants his gold guys! He really, really, wants his goshdanged gold!
Pointless kids start dying off, in typical horror movie fashion, and it takes a while to get everyone on the "its totally a leprechaun" page. There's some pretty decent kills. Nothing super awesome just lots of blood and deaths in situations these guys could have almost certainly avoided if it wasn't a horror movie.
In the end the leprechaun is defeated again... or is he... mwahahahahah!! *cough* ugh.. sorry anout that.
All around it was a pretty good movie. I laughed quite a bit and enjoyed it. It's definitely a movie that knew what it was from the beginning and never took itself seriously. It was just a lighthearted murderfest led by the real hero, short angry dude.
The movie is filled with nice little short bits of humor and lines. Lots of nods to the original, especially in the ways to distract the leprechaun, even though none of the characters knew about them, it still ended up happening and being funny for the audience.
It also had a couple of nice moments where it turned the old movie trope of "walking away after a speech or at the end of the movie" on its ear, and I really liked those.
The actors were good. Everything was believable and overall the movie was quite funny. Lots of good lines. The new leprechaun was good and felt completely in place for the series. The actor did a great job and the costume was well done. I loved his hat!
All in all, it was a pretty good movie and if you like cheesy b-grade horror movies like I do, I'd say check it out! I give it a poop and a half!
